Learn moreAbout Crewe
Crewe was purpose-built as a railway town in the 1840s when the Grand Junction Railway relocated its locomotive works here, and the railway has defined the town ever since. At its peak, the Crewe Works employed over 20,000 people and produced some of the most famous steam locomotives in British history. Today the engineering tradition continues through Bentley Motors, which has manufactured luxury cars at its Pyms Lane factory since 1946 and remains the town's single largest private employer. Crewe sits at one of Britain's most important rail junctions, with direct services to London Euston, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Edinburgh. the proposed HS2 hub station would have further cemented this connectivity, and the town continues to position itself as a northern transport gateway regardless of HS2's future. The local economy extends well beyond engineering. Crewe Business Park on Weston Road houses major employers including Mornflake Oats and several financial services firms, while the Royal Mail operates one of its largest regional sorting centres here. The town centre is undergoing significant regeneration through the Royal Arcade redevelopment and the Lyceum Square project, backed by the Towns Fund. South Cheshire College and the University Centre provide further education, and the wider borough of Cheshire East offers one of the strongest local economies in the North West.
